The Diola shea butter processing facility is located 2.5 hours outside of Bamako, Mali. This is by far the most mechanized shea production center that I have visited so far. Most of the equipment was brought in from neighboring Burkina Faso and modified for the use of the cooperative. Using appropriate technology can reduce some of the back breaking work involved in the production of shea butter. The most successful technologies in rural production should be easy to use and not require large amounts of electricity, water or fuel to function.

Regional demand for shea in West Africa can provide market for women producers. Djiola cooperative focuses current production to meet the needs of the local market

We visited a shea production center in Djiola, 2.5 hours outside of Bamako. Madam Fatima Jallo head of the Union of Local Shea Producers gave us a brief history of the Union and it’s accomplishments. Formed in in September of 2001, the Union was originally started on a village level and then progressed into a union of 45 locall cooperatives of 1,673 women.

The cooperatives bring processed shea butter to the Union center where further filtering and packaging is done to produce a premium grade of shea butter for the local market.

They have future goals of targeting the international market, but right now they are meeting the local demand within Mali and the neighboring countries for quality shea and soap bars to be used for personal care.

Excerpt taken from:
Rural women process and sell shea butter / Radio Scripts / Farm Radio International.

The shea tree is a West African plant frequently found in villages and surrounding areas. The tree produces shea nuts towards the beginning of the rainy season. If the rainy season is generous, the trees produce many nuts. The tree’s wood burns very easily, and rural populations cut great numbers of shea trees to make charcoal.

Thanks to efforts by the agents of the Forest and Waters Departments and of village associations fighting against desertification, shea trees continue to exist.

Rural women – who are the people most affected by poverty – lead the efforts to process shea nuts into shea butter. When women sell shea butter in the marketplace, the income allows them to support their families. As detailed in the script, these women would greatly benefit if they had machinery such as a mill because it would help them transform the shea nut into a softer paste. Machinery would also help make the processing quicker and less tiring than processing by hand.

Milling is done after the crushed shea nuts are roasted and cooled. Milling breaks the nuts down to finer particles in preparation for the next step of extraction. The women use a semi mechanical mill for this process. Due to shortage of financing, most producers use a common mill that is used in processing other products. It is recommended that a dedicated mill be used for Shea Butter production to eliminate contaminants and debris.

After the Shea kernels have been dried the next step is to crush the nuts using a mortar and pestle. One of the reasons I like the traditional method of processing shea butter is that the women are fully engaged in maintaining the quality of the product through every phase of production. I noticed that at every phase they continuously sorted and picked out damaged nuts or debris that might have inadvertently been incorporated into the batch.

According to George Adebiyi, Fullbright Scholar and Mississippi State University mechanical engineering professor, finding a more efficient and affordable way for average farmers to dry their crops, will be a big step toward improving storage. According to Adebiyi, without proper storage, they have to sell their crops early and not be able to sell at the right price.

This is one event I wish I could have attended. It took place in Accra, Ghana 2 weeks after I left. The underlying theme of Makers Faire inaugural event is to celebrate ingenuity, innovation and invention within Africa. The key words here are to celebrate and have fun while absorbing, interacting and learning from the creativity of others.

What I loved most about the promotion of this event is that there are no educational and or professional restrictions on participating as Maker at MFA.

Looking forward to Maker Faire 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya
